This one I would like to dedicate to Robin Holtkamp who introduced me to dish washing liquid dawn, who got it from Carissa Beckman, where I put my spin on it after researching on the internet.
Living in Suriname can be tough and anyone who rides here can say that this one of the most expensive sports there is. Having that said, it is one of the most wonderful things to do and if you love animals it's a plus.
I have been blessed to have this experience thanks to my family. But like I said it can get quite expensive.
Most of the stuff like apparel I have to buy from the States, because they are in my opinion way cheaper than getting stuff from Holland.
But again me being cheap, in my words 'frugal' I had to figure out a way to get a cheaper fly spray for my horsies, and believe you me especially here the 'kow freys' are everywhere.
I have featured already in my apple cider vinegar blog, but hell now I have pictures !!! yay !!!
I bought something called off I think and spend about SRD 120 (holy moley) U$45 to get flies off my babies.
Now I found something much cheaper that I would like to share with my fellow Surinamese riders.
Hold in mind I am not saying that it will help, it did however for me.
My next step is to safe a rusted stirrup that was here with WD-40, I am still working on that experiment Oh well. I will let you guys know.
So this little experiment will cost approximately SRD 30 and guess what you can make 3 big batches of fly spray.
To get my stuff I went to the following stores: Kirpalani en Choi's.
The tools |
At Kirplani I got the spray bottle for about SRD 8 ( U$ 3.00). You could use this multiple times, go JO thinking of the environment.
Kirpalani spray bottle lol |
Apple Cider Vinegar !!! |
Dawn original dishwashing liquid |
Here is the recipe:
The solution is Apple Cider Vinegar: Dawn: water= 3: 1: 3
So e.g you would have 3 cups of vinegar to one cup of dawn dishwashing liquid to 3 cups of water.
Put it in the spray and shake, shake, shake it !!!
The color should be kind of palish blue...see the picture.
Your solution should look like this ynummies !!! |
From what I have gathered is that the dawn, when insects would want to go on your horse stays on them and leaves an unpleasant taste. You will still see a couple flies, but most of them will be gone.
When the horses sweat, you will need to re-aplly though, so yeah there ya go.
